Green Cloud, Generous Heart: How Salesforce is Driving Sustainability and Social Impact

In the fast-evolving tech landscape, innovation often takes center stage—but Salesforce is proving that true leadership means pairing technological advancement with a commitment to the planet and people. From pioneering climate action to empowering communities worldwide, Salesforce’s sustainability and philanthropy initiatives are setting a new gold standard for corporate responsibility.

Climate Action: Building a Greener Future

Salesforce has made sustainability a core part of its business strategy, going far beyond internal carbon reductions to lead global environmental initiatives.

The Net Zero Commitment

Salesforce achieved Net Zero across its value chain in 2021 and continues to maintain this status annually. Through its Net Zero Cloud—a sustainability management platform—it helps other businesses track and reduce their own carbon footprints. The platform’s recent AI-powered upgrades, including predictive analytics and automated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting, make it easier for organizations to meet and exceed climate targets.

Nature-Based Solutions: The 1t.org Initiative

As a founding partner of 1t.org, Salesforce has pledged to support the restoration and conservation of 100 million trees by 2030. To date, the company has helped restore 46 million trees worldwide. These projects don’t just store carbon—they also protect biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and support local communities through sustainable forestry jobs.

Funding Climate Innovation

Salesforce has committed $8.3 million in climate justice and nature-based grants, targeting nonprofits and social enterprises that address climate change at the grassroots level. The Accelerator for Nature program helps these organizations scale their impact, offering both funding and access to Salesforce’s technology ecosystem.

Sustainable AI Practices

While AI development is often criticized for its high energy demands, Salesforce is taking a different path. Its AI systems run on data centers that produce 68.8% fewer carbon emissions than the global average. Any remaining emissions are offset through renewable energy procurement and verified carbon credits.

Philanthropy in Action: The 1-1-1 Model

Salesforce’s 1-1-1 model—donating 1% of equity, 1% of product, and 1% of employee time—has been part of its DNA for over 25 years. The results are staggering:

  • $700 million+ in grants awarded globally

  • 8.7 million+ volunteer hours contributed by employees

  • 56,000+ nonprofits and educational institutions using Salesforce technology for free or at a discounted rate

These contributions extend beyond financial aid. For example, Salesforce employees have provided hands-on mentorship to young entrepreneurs, helped nonprofits optimize their fundraising strategies, and built digital infrastructures for organizations in need.

Education & Workforce Development

Salesforce recognizes that technology is only as powerful as the people who use it. That’s why education—especially in underserved communities—is a key focus area.

Investing in Education Grants

In fiscal year 2024 alone, Salesforce awarded $36 million in education grants to 46 organizations, reaching over 7 million students and 100,000 educators worldwide. Funding supports a range of initiatives, from improving STEM education to creating alternative career pathways for those without traditional academic backgrounds.

Equity in Access

By partnering with schools, nonprofits, and community groups, Salesforce is ensuring that the next generation of talent—regardless of income, geography, or background—has access to the tools, training, and opportunities they need to thrive in the digital economy.

The Bigger Picture

Salesforce’s dual commitment—to leading technological innovation and making a tangible difference in the world—demonstrates that profitability and purpose are not mutually exclusive. For businesses navigating the pressures of digital transformation, climate change, and social responsibility, Salesforce stands as proof that you can drive revenue while making a positive impact.
